The City of České Budějovice

České Budějovice recently celebrated the 750th anniversary of its founding in 1265 by King of Bohemia Ottokar II. It is after this monarch that the famous square in the historic city center is named. The regional city is known for its hectare square dominated by the Samson Fountain, one of the largest in the Czech Republic. The square itself also ranks among the largest of its kind. Another dominant feature of the square is the Black Tower. The city is known thanks to many enterprises, including the world-famous Budvar Brewery, the Koh-i-Noor pencil factory and the Madeta Dairy. The city is also home to many local companies of supernational quality and countless excellent food businesses. The city is best reached by the road passing the Temelín Nuclear Power Plant and the town of Hluboká nad Vltavou. You can also reach České Budějovice on the Vltava River.

Black Tower

A total of 225 stairs lead to the top of the square’s dominant feature, where visitors are rewarded with a stunning view of the broad surrounding area.

České Budějovice Town Hall

With its facade depicting the Judgment of Solomon, the town hall is another prominent work of architecture. Four statutes on the roof watch over the city; bee hives on the roof also produce town hall honey. Regular organized tours allow visitors to view the inside of the town hall.

Budějovický Budvar

The national brewery gives visitors a chance not only to taste world-famous beer, but also to go directly through the production of the golden brew. Tours take guests directly into production with a guide through a special sightseeing circuit, including the bottling plant, the brew house and cellars.

Horse-Drawn Railroad Museum

The oldest horse-drawn railway in continental Europe, the forerunner of rail transport, began right in České Budějovice and ran to Linz. The railway was mainly used to transport goods – primarily salt. The museum is located in a former guard house and is one of the branches of the South Bohemian Museum, which also has its main building in the city.

Vltava and Malše rivers

České Budějovice is a city of water and many activities can be enjoyed on the Vltava and Malše rivers. A distributary of the Malše is especially ideal for pedal boating; you can rent a boat, have a coffee at a floating café, enjoy a concert on the water or go on a guided boat cruise. If you head out on the Vltava, you can ride the current through Týn nad Vltavou all the way to Prague.
